2025-26 DCIG TOP 5 Enterprise Multi-hypervisor Backup Report Now Available

Complimentary Report Provides Enterprises with Guidance on the Best Backup Solutions for them to Choose to Protect their Multi-hypervisor Environments

OMAHA, Neb. – DCIG is pleased to announce the immediate availability of its 57th TOP 5 report, the 2025-26 DCIG TOP 5 Enterprise Multi-hypervisor Backup Report. This DCIG TOP 5 report provides enterprises with guidance on the best backup solutions for them to choose from today to protect their multi-hypervisor environments. The report is available for free download with registration.

Broadcom’s software licensing and pricing changes since it acquired VMware have prompted many enterprises to consider adopting other hypervisors. While enterprises continue to use VMware vSphere that could rapidly change. At least one survey foundthat up to 70 percent of enterprises could possess multi-hypervisor environments in the coming years.

A change in hypervisor impacts enterprises in multiple ways. These impacts may range from the server hardware they use to the clouds they use to a need to retrain their IT staff. Among these changes, enterprises must also re-evaluate the backup software they use to protect their IT environment.

As they consider other backup solutions, enterprises will find they have multiple multi-hypervisor backup solutions from which to choose. These mature backup products already:

  • Protect virtualized environments (largely VMware) and use the VMware data protection APIs to do so.
  • Come from data protection providers that know how to adopt and implement new API operations as alternative hypervisor providers continue to evolve and mature their API.

In short, enterprises will not have to start over when it comes to protecting alternative VMware hypervisors. However, they will find fewer backup solutions that can protect multiple hypervisors.

DCIG only evaluated thirteen (13) backup solutions as compared to the more than 30 solutions available to protect VMware vSphere. While fewer choices, these thirteen multi-hypervisor backup solutions represent established, mature offerings with the core functionality that enterprises prioritize. Further, they also possess multiple new features that address the issues that enterprises now frequently encounter.

Across these thirteen solutions, DCIG evaluated hundreds of features on each one that DCIG grouped into the following nine general categories. These include:

  • Backup Administration.
  • Configuration, Licensing, and Pricing.
  • General Data Protection Capabilities.
  • Linux KVM Backup.
  • Microsoft Hyper-V Backup.
  • Nutanix AHV Backup
  • Recovery and Restore.
  • Service and Support.
  • VMware vSphere Backup.

Based on these criteria, DCIG awarded the following multi-hypervisor backup solutions a DCIG TOP 5 ranking (in alphabetical order) in the enterprise space:

  • Arcserve Unified Data Protection
  • Cohesity DataProtect
  • Cohesity NetBackup
  • Commvault Cloud Backup and Recovery
  • OpenText Data Protector
