Asigra TrueNAS® Backup Appliance Named Backup/DR Hardware Product of the Year

by Jon Seals | February 20, 2019 | Uncategorized | 0 comments

Innovative partnership earns Gold in TechTarget’s Storage Magazine 2018 Product of the Year competition

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Enterprise storage provider iXsystems® and backup and recovery partner Asigra® Inc. received the highest award, Gold, in TechTarget’s Storage Magazine for the jointly-developed Asigra TrueNAS Backup Appliance. This ranking establishes the appliance as the 2018 Backup/DR Hardware Product of the Year, edging out over 100 entries and 51 finalists, including industry giants like Dell EMC and Commvault.

Announced in August of 2018, the iXsystems/Asigra partnership combines best-in-class hardware and software into a turnkey backup appliance that excelled in all six TechTarget review criteria: innovation, performance, ease of integration, ease of use and management, functionality, and value.

“The Asigra TrueNAS Backup Appliance impressed the judges in several areas,” said TechTarget. “Affordability was a factor, as the lowest-capacity model of Asigra TrueNAS starts at $10,000 and comes with 60 TB of storage. Price scales with capacity, with the highest-end configuration holding up to 10 petabytes.” Another judge summed up the complete package as having “great functionality [and] good pricing.”

TrueNAS Enterprise Storage

TrueNAS is based on the world’s leading Open Source storage operating system, FreeNAS (also developed by iXsystems), and uses OpenZFS to keep data safe on disk. TrueNAS is unified storage (block and file) that provides unlimited snapshots, replication, thin/thick provisioning, and inline compression, all with ultra-low latency thanks to its flash-accelerated architecture. TrueNAS integrates Asigra Cloud Backup Evolved V14 on both the compact TrueNAS X-Series and the high performance TrueNAS M-Series platforms, each of which has a dual controller (HA) option. Scalable from 10 TB to 10 PB of capacity with sustained throughput up to 10 GB/s, these platforms are ready for enterprise backups of any size.

Asigra Backup™

The award-winning Asigra Cloud Backup Evolved V14 is a single, comprehensive, multi-tenant data protection platform for all types of corporate data. The solution can backup physical and virtual servers, databases, enterprise applications, endpoint devices, and even cloud services such as MS Office 365, G Suite, Salesforce, AWS and Azure. Asigra provides a global deduplication capability that minimizes storage and WAN costs. It is also the first backup solution to integrate malware detection, preventing ransomware from infecting backups that cause attack-loops. Asigra’s flexible and cost-effective licensing model has been widely adopted by Managed Service Providers (MSPs).

“We’re thrilled with our partnership with Asigra and the response from our customers and TechTarget. The Open Source nature of our platform is ideally suited to partnerships with software vendors, like Asigra, that add significant value. The Asigra TrueNAS Backup Appliance provides industry leadership in value and deployment simplicity for whole Enterprise backup needs.”

– Morgan Littlewood, iXsystems Senior Vice President, Product Management

The Perfect Match

The TrueNAS/Asigra partnership was forged to leverage the core capabilities of each product to produce the most competitive and full-featured backup and disaster recovery appliance on the market. The Asigra TrueNAS Backup Appliance leverages the enterprise storage functionality of TrueNAS, and the backup and recovery functionality of Asigra, to create an integrated appliance that is easier to deploy, manage, and recover backups. The Asigra TrueNAS Backup Appliance is available directly from Asigra and iXsystems channel partners.

The Asigra TrueNAS product has been well received since its introduction in August 2018, and this award is further proof of the market need it fills. Next step for this partnership will bring the Asigra suite to the community edition of the TrueNAS family, FreeNAS, offering hundreds of thousands of FreeNAS users an award-winning enterprise backup solution as well.

“Customers agree that the Asigra TrueNAS Backup Appliance delivers unmatched data protection for their businesses, thanks to the most powerful data recovery, ransomware defense and compliance suite on the market,” said Eran Farajun, Executive Vice President, Asigra. “The ability of the appliance to prevent cyber-attacks on backup data is a game-changer and we are excited to see it recognized as a best in class solution.”
