FEMA is providing additional funding to help eligible homeowners in area covered by Presidential Disaster Declarations due to wildfire make repairs to address smoke and ash in ways that will reduce the likelihood of future disaster damage.
As part of its commitment to make communities stronger and more resilient, FEMA is providing mitigation assistance to eligible homeowners under the Individuals and Households Program (IHP) for several additional hazard mitigation measures. The additional funding will help eligible homeowners in areas covered by Presidential Disaster Declarations due to wildfire to make repairs intended to address smoke and ash in ways that will reduce the likelihood of future disaster damage.
Applicants who are approved for IHP Home Repair Assistance may receive additional funds for specific mitigation measures. In addition to funds needed to repair their roof, eligible homeowners may also receive money above the cost of basic repairs to install non-combustible leaf guards over gutters to avoid future fire damage. Homeowners may also be found eligible for funds to cover attic vents, crawlspace vents, and vents in enclosures below decks with metal screens to help prevent embers from entering and spreading fires to the interior of homes.
The additional funds for mitigation measures are subject to the Stafford Act limit for Housing Assistance, which is $37,900 for FY2022. The mitigation measures are limited and will only be provided for specific elements of the home that were present and functional before they were damaged by the disaster.
This additional assistance will be available for all Presidential Disaster Declarations occurring on or after July 27, 2022.
In June 2021, FEMA announced the initial phase of additional eligible mitigation measures related to roof repair, elevating water heaters or furnaces and elevating or moving electrical panels.
