Imagine a world where every girl and woman is encouraged to explore the wonders of science and technology, where their contributions are not only recognized but celebrated. That’s the vision behind the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. It’s a day that calls for change, a day that urges us to break barriers and empower the next generation of STEM leaders.
Back in 2015, the United Nations General Assembly saw the need to promote gender equality in scientific fields and declared February 11th as a day to honor women and girls in science. Since then, this day has been a rallying cry for action, a reminder of the importance of inclusivity and diversity in shaping the future of innovation.
Yet, despite the progress we’ve made, there’s still a long road ahead. Women continue to be underrepresented in STEM, and the gender gap persists across all levels of scientific disciplines. But here’s the thing: change starts with us. It starts with each and every one of us committing to championing gender equality in science.
Let’s look at the numbers: globally, women make up only 28% of researchers, and less than 30% pursue STEM fields in higher education. This imbalance not only deprives us of diverse perspectives but also hinders our ability to tackle the world’s most pressing challenges.
But here’s the silver lining: progress is possible. More and more women are stepping into STEM careers, breaking stereotypes, and shattering glass ceilings. We can fuel this momentum by providing support, mentorship, and opportunities and creating a more equitable future for all.
So, on this International Day of Women and Girls in Science, let’s commit to spark change. Let’s inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators, regardless of gender. Together, we can build a world where every girl knows that her potential is limitless and every woman’s voice is heard and valued. Let’s dare to dream big and create a future where equality reigns supreme.

Back when I was at school, Information Technology wasn’t even on the curriculum, but during my first year at Stirling University, I discovered computer science. Unfortunately, girls often divert from STEM paths due to disparities in treatment, both in educational settings and professional fields.
