Ting app update delivers neighborhood-level power outage alerts across the U.S., filling a critical gap in safety and preparedness
GERMANTOWN, MD – Whisker Labs, a leader in home electrical safety and grid intelligence, today launched a transformative update to its Ting app that, for the first time, makes real-time, hyper-local power outage alerts available to anyone in the U.S. – completely free.
Power outages strike more than 230,000 times each year in the U.S., often without warning, cutting off cooling or heat, medical devices, internet and other essentials. Starting today, Americans have a new way to stay informed during these critical moments. The Ting app delivers neighborhood-specific notifications when the power goes out – and comes back on – marking a major shift in how people stay informed during outages.
“There’s never been an easy, accurate way for people to know exactly when the power goes out,” said Bob Marshall, CEO and co-founder of Whisker Labs. “With this update, Ting becomes the first app to deliver real-time alerts to any home across the country, for free. It’s a simple tool, but it fills a major gap in how we stay informed and safe when the grid goes down.”
The updated Ting app includes these powerful new features:
- Free Real-Time Power Outage Alerts: Know the moment power goes out or gets restored in your neighborhood or at another location you choose.
- Interactive Outage Map: Zoom around a live, nationwide map of outages and explore power events near you to prepare accordingly.
- Save a Location That Matters: Add your home, a loved one’s, or another important address.
- Optional Fire Prevention Upgrade: Add a Ting sensor to unlock personalized power outage alerts, in-home electrical fire hazard detection, and expert-guided fire prevention.
The launch comes as America’s power grid faces mounting strain from aging infrastructure and extreme weather. According to data from the U.S. Department of Energy, major outages have nearly doubled in two decades. During Hurricane Beryl in 2024, 2.2 million Houston-area residents lacked reliable outage information – resorting to the Whataburger app to see which locations had power. The workaround underscored a deeper problem: Americans lack consistent, trusted outage information when they need it most. Ting’s free power outage insights fixes that.
Ting was originally created to prevent electrical fires after an undetected hazard destroyed CEO Bob Marshall’s family member’s home. Today, by helping protect their own homes with a Ting sensor, the Ting community contributes to a larger impact by helping to power the nation’s most advanced electrical safety network that benefits everyone. With the Ting app, real-time outage awareness is now available to any household – no sensor required.
