The Edge Today: Where IT Should Focus

The topic of “edge IT” has become an area of intense focus for more and more data-driven organizations. This is for good reason, as the perimeter of the network has become a critical gateway for data collection and processing. The edge is now used to describe anything from remote office and branch office (ROBO) sites, to IoT sensors and equipment, mobile point-of-sale devices, manufacturing sites, and even deployed military missions, just to name a few. Each of the mentioned edge types can be radically different, each with unique functions. The edge is the data entry point for the organization – it is the front line of operational success and a key contributor to business agility, as well as the realization of digital transformation for companies across all industries. Basically, the edge is where business happens. In response, enterprises have been quick to launch digital programs to better support edge operations. Unfortunately,
