Data Replication is the Key to Business Continuance (Part 2)

Written by  Robert A. Collar

Overview In the first part of this series, the decisions and steps needed to replicate data efficiently set the stage for the next logical question: How does a business proceed? Ideation always leads to implementation in an effective organization, but implementation has a logic all its own. What replication mechanisms are available? Replication can be performed any number of ways, depending upon where the actual replication process is performed -- on the server, the controller, or an external appliance. Each presents implementation challenges. Server-Based Replication To date, server-based replication is performed by software residing on the server. There may eventually be a hardware-based solution that can sit within the server, but to date there are no controllers able to separately address or manage these separate instances of data. Just as there are several mechanisms available for replication, there are several different approaches that can be used on the server. Replication can be performed by an application or utility, or
