‘Please Change Your Password’

Have you ever received an e-mail similar to this from your security team? “Your network/domain password must be changed to protect the integrity of our data. A system breach was detected which is necessitating this change.” Now let’s assume your company doesn’t use traditional passwords, but rather they use biometrics, such as fingerprints. So now the email would read: “Your fingerprints must be changed to protect the integrity of our data. A system breach was detected which is necessitating this change.” Okay, laugh if you want, but the same hackers who stole security clearance data on millions of defense department and other U.S. government employees also got away with about 5.6 million fingerprint records. The USA Office of Personnel Management (OPM) described the threat of fingerprint data being misused as “limited.” I wonder what that statement really means, because I was under the impression that employees’ fingerprints are used to enter some of
