This research explores the response of the United States military reserve forces in regard to Hurricane Katrina search and rescue (SAR) operations conducted both during and after the disaster. The discussion begins with a brief background of Hurricane Katrina, detailing the damage the storm caused, particularly to the New Orleans, La., area. This account is followed with an explanation and history of the reserve forces, including a survey of the capabilities of the reserve force for each branch of service.
