EDITOR’S NOTE: Leading up to DRJ Spring 2025, Disaster Recovery Journal will highlight the authors featured in the “Resilience Reads: Meet the Authors” exhibition in Orlando, Fla.
“The Joy of Metrics” is a guide to using resilience metrics to strengthen organizations in the face of uncertainty. Co-authored by Dawn Grzena and Dr. Bernard Jones, the book provides practical frameworks, real-world case studies, and actionable insights to help professionals track performance, predict outcomes, and align metrics with strategic goals. As businesses face increasing risks from disasters and crises, this book highlights the critical role of data-driven decision-making in building effective disaster recovery and resilience strategies.
Grzena has built a reputation for driving success in operational resilience with more than 20 years of experience across various sectors. She recently founded B4theCrisis.com, which is dedicated to resilience for both individuals and businesses.
Jones is an associate professor of homeland security and emergency management at St. John’s University. He is a longtime business continuity practitioner with more than 20 years of experience before joining St. John’s University in 2017.
“We partnered together on the topic of organizational metrics several years back,” Jones said. “We decided to author a book to help practitioners understand which metrics to capture and, more importantly, the best practices to articulate the metrics successfully. We aimed to create an easy-to-read narrative about a topic that is not top of mind.”
“I’ve always dreamed of someday being an author,” Jones said. “After many years of researching, presenting, and talking about the topic, I felt it was time to put pen to paper and write a book.”
Readers can purchase “The Joy of Metrics: Harness the Power of Measurement & Visualization to Enhance Your Organizational Resilience Program” at BookLocker or Amazon.
Jones has written several journal articles and book chapters. The diversity of his work ranges from organizational resilience and business continuity innovation to racial and ethnic disparities in emergency management, emotional intelligence, and personal resilience.
He has already begun working on his next book, “Roots in the Concrete – Echoes from the South Bronx.”
“It’s an autobiographic journey of my life growing up in the South Bronx, overcoming challenges and obstacles, and reaching success academically and professionally,” Jones said. “My goal is to inspire those to reach new heights despite their challenges. I hope my story will resonate and change the lives of others for the better.”
Grzena is unable to attend DRJ Spring 2025, but Jones and other “Resilience Reads” authors will take part in an exhibit March 23-26, 2025, in Orlando, Fla. Conference attendees will have a chance to meet leading industry experts, exchange ideas, and explore the latest insights in resilience. Don’t miss this opportunity to get a signed copy of their books and discover valuable resources to advance your career.
